Food & Accommodation for Solar Academy Students

RM45,233 of RM72,000 raised

Who are the Beneficiaries?

SOLS Solar Academy is a program created specifically for B40 youth to study while working in the field of solar PV system installation or electric vehicle (EV) charging station installation.

Students have been selected from rural and urban poor communities, from all over Malaysia, including Sabah & Sarawak. They will be receiving a full scholarship for the 12 months of full-time study and apprenticeship courses.

The Problem

Most of the selected students did not complete their schooling or get good enough results to continue to higher-level education. The jobs they are able to get at the moment are either minimum wage, inconsistent part-time jobs which do not allow them to have savings. They consider this opportunity as their second chance to be trained in a skill, gain employment and work towards having stable middle-class outcomes.

One of the students said, “Saya berhenti belajar nak cari duit, kerana keluarga tak ada duit nak makan.” – they quit school to be the breadwinner of the family. Choosing to attend the SOLS Solar Academy is a huge decision for their family. However, coming from a financially difficult background, they don’t have money to afford food and room rental in Kuala Lumpur while they attend the classes as it will create a further financial burden on their families to support them.

Without being able to afford food and room rental during their studies, the students will not be able to take this opportunity and improve their future.

The Solution

Understanding the need to support the students with the cost of safe boarding and daily meals, SOLS 24/7 decided to prepare a dormitory for the students with utilities (water, electricity, internet), a laptop or tablet and food throughout their 12-month study and apprenticeship period.

The Impact

We are hoping that with your donations, we will be able to fundraise enough money to provide comfortable accommodation with all basic necessities and healthy meals for the students. With your help, they can focus fully on their education, graduate successfully and have a better future.

Look at Our Future Solar Installers

Hey everyone! Thank you for your support so far.

Our students are busy practicing during their Solar PV panel installation practical class. Yes, here in the Solar Academy, students undergo preparation classes prior to their practical training placements. Our teachers guide the students and act as supervisors to teach them how to handle the solar panel installation from start to finish.

The students are showing good progress in terms of their academic, personal development and practical knowledge. Their teachers are also very happy that they are better at staying focused and engaged during their class. Also, they ask a lot of questions if they don’t understand anything related to their studies.

Apart from that, students are also practicing their English communication skills. They learn basic English grammar, reading, writing and speaking skills. One thing the students enjoy the most is how supportive the teachers are, they know when to be serious and when to joke around. Another important aspect which goes into their practical placement is how students work together in a team and support each other to complete their assignments and activities given during discussion.

Presentation practice also makes a huge difference in students’ personal development, especially in terms of their communication skills. They feel more comfortable and brave to talk in front of the class or even to ask questions rather than studying online.

The amount of progress and growth shown by the students makes us very happy and proud of them. Also, we wish them more success and best wishes to grow bigger and better.
